INSTAR Necklace

The ugly truth no one tells you concerning butterflies: transformation is… gruesome.

When a larva becomes a chrysalis, it releases enzymes that dissolve its own flesh. It literally digests itself into a caterpillar stew.

Within this stew are little clumps of cells called imaginal discs that survive the digestive process. These imaginal discs will use the protein rich goop to fuel cell division and become eyes, antennae, legs, wings… all the parts needed for a butterfly.

Seeing these changes as they happen is nearly impossible. Opening a chrysalis to get a peek (please don’t) would satisfy curiosity but would risk ruining the process altogether.

I have not chosen to celebrate the butterfly, but the process of radical transformation required to become one. I honor the sacrifices of the caterpillar.

All meaningful change is ugly and painful. Use the tools at your disposal. Trust your progress. Hang on as long as necessary. Hope there will be stew included.

The chrysalis pendant measures 1” high and 1/2” wide and is hand carved and cast in solid sterling silver. The caterpillar charm measures 1” long and is hand carved and cast in solid bronze.

The sterling silver chain measures 28” and all fittings and clasps are sterling silver.

Necklace can be worn multiple ways: doubled, as a single chain, or as a Y necklace.

Handmade entirely in the USA.
