The hexafoil has a long history as a ritual protection mark. It dates back to the Bronze Age, where it was used at ancient burial sites. During the Roman period, it was often seen carved on altar stones. The hexafoil is a symbol of purity often associated with the Trinity. Anglo-Saxons and Normans used it on baptismal fonts to safeguard the spiritually vulnerable. The symbol is seen in doorways, fireplaces and furniture as architectural spells to ward evil. The Pennsylvania Dutch decorate barns with colorful Hex Signs, “painted prayers”, to represent good luck and protection from fire and disease.
